Letters to family members

My dad died over 4 years ago, but my mom still hasn't gone through all of his belongings. She threw some stuff away, donated his clothes to charity, kept some things...

Today, she found a pile of old letters that I wrote to my dad and that he kept preciously in a drawer. Letters and cards that I wrote between the ages of 8 and 12. In one of them, I thanked him for pulling one of my teeth out because I didn't have the courage to do it myself. Ah, memories!

I always loved writing, so I wrote letters and notes to my parents when I was younger. They did the same. Especially when one of us went away for a few days... My dad was an author so every year he went on tours around the country to visit students in schools. He would send me letters and postcards! I found them last week and was so excited! My parents, my sister and my friends also wrote me letters when I went to Ontario for 3 months as an exchange student when I was 14. I kept all of those letters.

Did any of you who are into penpalling write letters to your parents or family members when you were younger?

I no longer do it, but I'd like to start again! My mom started sending postcards to Louis-Justin in the mail recently and he loves it. Maybe I should surprise my mom and send her a little something too! :)

  1. MY son Noah loves to write notes and letters. He gets postcards from his Nana in New Zealand, my mum. He wishes he got more letters. I always reply "You have to send letters to get letters".

Sorry about your dad, you must miss him.

  3. Hehe, well yes-- I kind of wrote notes to my parents... actually, the Easter Bunny/Santa always replied to the notes I'd leave for them...(little did I know at the time-- I was actually writing to my parents!) I guess you could say that the Easter Bunny/Santa were two of my first penpals. :]

Before I had my sons, I always sent my great grandma handmade mail... postcards, letters, drawings, photos... anything I could think of that I knew would put a little sunshine in her day. (She lived in a nursing home)... she passed away when Ashton was 1 month old. I still have a box filled with all of the things I had made for her.

  4. Aww, that's so sweet Ashley! I'm sure receiving something from you in the mail made your great grandma's day every time! :)

It made me laugh to read that the Easter Bunny and Santa were your first penpals! haha!

  5. It's funny because my nanna and I have always been real close and she lives 2 blocks away and we still write letters to each other and send them. She has a hard time hearing so she doesnt use the phone, so we write letters to each other when she isnt sick.

When i was a kid and on vacation I would write my mom from my dads summer home and the friends I met there I would write them when I got back home to my moms. So, my penpalling started when I was 5 or 6, because I still have those friends and we still write each other..lol.. My daughter is 5 now and loves sending notes and drawings to her friends in school. Im sure she would love to send some to your son if you are interested.

  6. I've just started writing lunchbox notes to my 7 and 5 year old kids. They quickly fell in love with the idea and now insist that they get one every day! I love that they have a little bit of love from home to keep in their pockets all day so they know I'm thinking of them.

Turns out, my 7 year old has been saving them all and is now making a wall collage in her room with them. A handwritten note to someone you love can really make a lasting impression.
